LUTECE, NAISSANCE D'UNE VILLE L'existence de la Lutèce gauloise est révélée dans La Guerre des Gaules lorsque César mentionne cette place forte que les Parisii préférèrent détruire plutôt que la livrer au conquérant romain. Où se trouvait-elle exactement ? Dans l'île de la Cité où un certain romantisme municipal a toujours voulu la situer bien que peu de vestiges y aient été trouvés ? Ou ailleurs, à Nanterre ? Toujours est-il qu'une ville nouvelle s'implante dès le Haut-Empire sur les pentes de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, selon un quadrillage structuré autour de l'axe principal d'un cardo (actuelles rues Saint-Jacques, du Petit-Pont, de la Cité et Saint-Martin).
Abandonnée au milieu du iiie siècle, elle migrera à partir du ive siècle vers l'île de la Cité, détruisant au besoin les monuments de la rive gauche pour en récupérer les matériaux et construire l'enceinte, un édifice militaire à l'origine du palais royal médiéval, la basilique et les thermes de la nouvelle Lutèce. Les vestiges de ces occupations successives - y compris excentrées, comme à Montmartre - n'ont pas manqué de frapper les esprits érudits dès le Moyen Age ou la Renaissance, mais c'est essentiellement à partir des grands travaux haussmanniens que la ville antique a été redécouverte.
De nombreuses fouilles ont été conduites depuis, qui précisent les contours et l'organisation de la cité disparue. Recouverte par tous les âges de la ville, la Lutèce gallo-romaine en oriente pourtant durablement le développement. Cet atlas richement illustré donne à voir la naissance de la capitale des Gaules à travers notamment les différents vestiges subsistant dans Paris.
